Mr Matthew Wilson, Consultant Hip Surgeon

A career dedicated to the hip

I'm a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Exeter, and my practice is dedicated exclusively to conditions of the hip: it's the only joint I treat, and I've built my whole career around it. I studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College in London, qualifying in 1997. I completed my orthopaedic training in Reading, Oxford, Derby and Nottingham, including time with the Trauma Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. I was fellowship trained in Hip Reconstruction Surgery at the Exeter Hip Unit and in Hip Preservation Surgery by Mr Richard Villar in Cambridge.

I was appointed as a Consultant specialising in hip reconstructive surgery to the Exeter Hip Unit in 2010. I'm a past President of the British Hip Society and have served on its Executive since 2019. I am a past Regional Clinical Coordinator of the National Joint Registry, and in 2016 I was selected by the American Hip Society as the Rothman–Ranawat travelling fellow. I was a founding member of the Non-Arthroplasty Hip Registry in 2013 and have served on the Editorial Board of the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

I gain satisfaction, and take professional pride, in the diagnosis and management of disorders of the young adult hip, and complex primary and revision hip surgery. I also enjoy training hip fellows at the Exeter Hip Unit and taking an active interest in research into the long-term outcomes of hip surgery.

About me

I've always liked working with my hands — there's an obvious overlap with engineering, and it's part of what drew me to orthopaedics in the first place. From fixing fractures in trauma through to hip replacement — often described as "the operation of the century" — I've seen first-hand just how life-changing this work can be for people.

I was brought up, educated and trained in London, but Devon has been home since 2008. I live here with my wife, an Exeter GP who works with vulnerably housed patients and those with addiction problems, and our two children — one studying business at the University of Bath, the other still at school in Exeter. Between our two dogs, a couple of horses, and the moors, the river and the sea on our doorstep, we feel very fortunate to call the South West home.
